Best cleaning schedules for working parents: three approaches compared

Choose Clean Mama if you want a suggested task for each day of the week. Choose FlyLady if you want to work through household zones, or Something Lighter if you want to write a smaller schedule around your own tasks and cues.

This comparison comes from Something Lighter and includes our own guide. It compares published instructions, not results from household trials. Reviewed 13 October 2026.

Three starting approaches and their limits

Something LighterSomething Lighter suggests two daily tasks, two weekly tasks, and one monthly review, adjusted to the household. Each task can have a cue, finish point, and shared owner.Something Lighter suits readers who want to choose their own tasks and write a smaller version for difficult weeks.Something Lighter asks you to choose the tasks. It does not supply a prescribed room-by-room calendar.
Clean MamaClean Mama supplies a weekly pattern, including bathrooms on Monday, dusting on Tuesday, and vacuuming on Wednesday.Clean Mama suits readers who want the starting weekly schedule chosen for them.Clean Mama’s standard weekday pattern may need changes around shift work. Adaptations are also available.
FlyLadyFlyLady divides the home into five zones and describes 15-minute sessions within its zone routine.FlyLady suits readers who want a rotating household area to focus on.FlyLady’s zone calendar adds a structure to learn. A 15-minute session does not mean a room will be finished.

What if my work shifts change every week?

Use a cue that happens in your day, such as after the last meal, rather than relying on the same clock time. Something Lighter’s Cleaning Schedule includes a cue field so you can write that event beside the task.

What if I want someone to tell me what to clean?

Clean Mama gives you a more prescribed starting week than Something Lighter. If choosing tasks is the part that stops you, that structure may suit you better than filling in your own schedule.

What if I miss several days?

Check what your household needs now and choose one task that supports the next day. In the Something Lighter Cleaning Schedule, write a difficult-week version before you need it, so the smaller list is ready when plans change.

Can someone else own the task?

Agree who will notice, prepare, do, and follow up on the task. The Something Lighter handover template helps you put that agreement into a message to review and copy.

Where should I begin?

If you want a schedule you fill in yourself, open Something Lighter’s free Cleaning Schedule and choose one task. If you want a prescribed weekly pattern or zone rotation, begin with Clean Mama’s schedule or FlyLady’s zone guide.
